Guna Milan — the 36-point compatibility score — is the heart of Indian matchmaking. It's genuinely useful, and also genuinely incomplete. Here's what the score measures, and the things it quietly leaves out.
Kundli matching (guna milan or ashtakoot milan) compares two birth charts across eight factors, or kootas, adding up to a maximum of 36 points. The higher the score, the more compatible the match is considered — but the number is a starting filter, not a verdict.
The 8 kootas and their 36 points
Each koota tests a different layer of compatibility and carries a different weight:

How many gunas do you actually need?
The common thresholds:
- Below 18 — traditionally considered not recommended on the score alone. - 18 to 24 — an acceptable, workable match. - 25 to 32 — a very good match. - 32 to 36 — excellent, and actually quite rare.
But a number in isolation means little. A match can score 30 and still carry a serious dosha, or score 16 yet be perfectly sound once the chart is read in full. The score narrows the field; it does not settle the question.
Nadi and Bhakoot dosha
Two kootas carry the most weight, and their absence creates the doshas people worry about most:
- Nadi dosha — when both partners share the same Nadi, the 8 points of Nadi are lost. It's associated with concerns around health and progeny, and is taken seriously. But it is cancelled in several situations — same Rashi with different Nakshatras, same Nakshatra with different padas, and other combinations. - Bhakoot dosha — certain Moon-sign pairings lose all 7 Bhakoot points, linked to finances and family harmony. It too has well-known cancellations, especially when the sign lords are friends or the same planet.
A dosha is a flag to investigate, not an automatic rejection.
The most important thing to understand
The 36-point score is a filter, not a verdict.
Guna Milan measures broad compatibility. It does not check Mangal Dosha, the strength of the 7th house and its lord, the condition of Venus and Jupiter, or the timing of each person's dasha. A responsible match reads all of these — the score is only where you start.
What the score leaves out
A complete matching goes well beyond the 36 points:
- Mangal Dosha in either chart — checked separately (see our Mangal Dosha guide). - The 7th house and its lord in both charts — the actual seat of marriage. - Venus and Jupiter — the natural significators of love and marriage for each partner. - Dasha and timing — whether the marriage period is supportive. - Longevity and health factors across both charts.
This is exactly why matching by name alone — with no birth time or place — is unreliable. Real matching needs both full charts.
We have started checking these rules against marriages where the outcome is a matter of public record. So far: 26 classical claims across three documented marriages — 10 held, 11 did not, 5 were too weak to call. The Ashtakoot total, specifically, has not separated them: two of these three marriages scored an identical 29.5 of 36, both rated Excellent — and one lasted four years while the other lasted twenty-two.
